    Young babies love to stare at their own reflections. Here are some simple games, involving mirrors and shiny surfaces, designed to capture your baby's attention.

    How to Play

    Cuddle your baby in your lap and hold a reflective surface in front of their eyes. It can be a mirror, shiny foil paper, or a shimmering CD.

    Watch your baby's reaction to the glinting light. Perhaps they will even try to grab the swift images as they dance in front of their eyes.

    Or settle yourselves in front of a mirror and hold your baby's face in front of yours. Make a face and see what happens - the results will be a delight for both of you.

    What you'll need

  • Small, unbreakable plastic handheld mirror
  • Medium-size, unbreakable plastic handheld mirror
  • Foil wrapping paper
  • Aluminum foil
  • CD


    • Tricks & advice

    Mirror games are easy to take on the road... or in the air! You can carry a small handheld mirror in your bag, or you can improvise. For instance, aluminium foil can be wrapped around a magazine, a piece of junk mail, a spoon, a stick, or a finger and waggled - with happy results - in front of your baby.

    Learning & growing

    Reflective surfaces help babies and toddlers develop an awareness of their bodies and facial expressions. This type of activity is a visual conversation your baby may enjoy alone or by including you.
