Article Summary

Even at the early stages, your growing foetus is moving around and will react to some sounds and movements. Your firstborn may be fascinated by what's going on in there so why not take advantage of a toddler's natural curiosity and talk to them about how the baby is developing?
BABY DEVELOPMENT

The latest news from inside your womb, and how to share it with your child

CONSTRUCTION TIME

By 9 weeks gestation your foetus measures about 2 cm long, approximately half and inch, and already the circulatory system is in place, with blood cells, vessels, and a heart that’s beating. Arms and legs are sprouting from small limb nodes and nerves and back vertebrae are making their appearance. Tiny buds that will form your little one’s lungs and muscles have also emerged.
Your foetus is busy wriggling and twisting, though it will take another month or so before you detect the first flutters in your stomach.
Amazingly even at this early stage your little one already startles in response to sudden movements or loud noises.

CHILD-FRIENDLY INFO

As soon as you have told your child about the baby, let him share the experience by going through this section of your Newsletters with him each month.
Relate the information in a simplified way to give him an idea of what’s going on inside your growing tummy.
For instance, compare the baby’s size to something that he can see, like a small grape or a thimble, and explain that even at this early stage, his sibling already has a beating heart – encouraging your child to feel his own heartbeat. Use examples from nature or photographs from your pregnancy books to illustrate your explanations.
