Article Summary
With the exceptions of Slapped Cheek Disease and Chickenpox, the majority of childhood diseases will do your unborn baby no harm. However, watch out for any bugs that cause diarrhoea and vomiting while you're pregnant, and consult you're doctor if you're at all concerned.
MUM CARE
Looking out for childhood illnesses, and keeping up with vital check-ups
KEEP BUGS AT BAY
If your child goes to school or nursery, you’re probably an expert in childhood bugs by now.
Young children seem to pick up endless coughs, sniffles and bad tummies during their first three years, and it’s often us mums who are the first to catch them at home.
Though the vast majority of bugs and gripes are harmless to your unborn
baby, their effect on you should be monitored more closely during
pregnancy. For instance, diarrhoea and vomiting leaves you feeling weak and can quickly develop into dehydration, so be extra vigilant about your liquid intake if you have caught a tummy bug from your child.
DISEASE ALERTS
Chickenpox and Slapped Cheek Disease are two childhood illnesses that pregnant mothers need to be wary of, as they pose a small risk to unborn babies. Most mothers are immune from both viruses, but it’s a good idea to stay away from contagious children, especially if you are not sure whether you suffered from these illnesses as a child.
Tell your child’s teachers that you are pregnant so that they can warn you if there is an outbreak at school or nursery, and if you have any concerns about these or other diseases, contact your doctor for advice.
