Article Summary
Everyone has strong preferences when it comes to food but being a picky eater is another matter. Use your ingenuity to plan a menu that keeps the whole family happy, and encourage a healthy, balanced diet.
FOOD - WHAT TO DO WHEN EVERYONE WANTS THEIR FAVOURITE MEAL?
We all know that adults have different tastes in food. Your partner may love Indian curries, while you distinctly prefer Japanese food, and your good friend delights in Italian pasta. Given that adults have distinctive preferences like these, you cannot expect your two children to like exactly the same foods.
However, try not to end up being a slave and having to cook different foods for each member of the family at every meal! Make it clear to the children that although tonight’s meal will be the older child’s favourite, tomorrow night’s meal will be the little sister’s [favourite, the day after will be either Mummy’s or Daddy’s favourite, but that everyone must try everyone else’s favourite meal.
Often the same food can be served in different ways. So, if your son loves meatballs and your daughter relishes spaghetti Bolognese, you will have bought minced meat for both. Try to set things up such that part of your cooking today is also relevant for tomorrow’s meal.
The best way to handle differing family tastes is to plan your meals and your shopping in advance, in particular with a mind to trying to have what is left from one meal serve as part of the ingredients for the next meal. And, don’t neglect your talents in camouflage! You can, for instance, grate fresh carrots into both spaghetti and meatballs, and your children will be consuming healthy vegetables without even realizing that they are doing so.
