Article Summary
Antenatal care visits can slip down your list of priorities when you're the busy mum of a demanding toddler. Here are a few good reasons for making sure you don't miss an appointment.
MUM CARE
The importance of good antenatal care, and how often should you visit your midwife.
ANTENATAL CARE - AS VITAL AS EVER
You might remember the antenatal care you received during your first
pregnancy. Second time around, all those appointments may seem rather excessive. After all, you know what you’re doing this time, and with another child to look after, perhaps work to fit in, and hectic daily routines keeping you busy, booking an appointment to see the midwife every few weeks may be the last thing on your mind.
But yours and your baby’s health depend on regular monitoring by professionals, to ensure that all is developing as it should, and so that any problems can be detected early and kept a close eye on.

APPOINTMENT REMINDER
For a low-risk (normal)
pregnancy, antenatal care visits are usually scheduled monthly until week 28, then fortnightly until week 36, then weekly until the birth, though for second-time mums many midwives reduce the total number of visits by a couple of appointments. At each visit your blood pressure and urine will be checked and your midwife will ask if you have any concerns. She will also examine the size of your uterus and listen to the baby’s heartbeat. Certain key appointments may also involve blood tests.
