Question:
My 10 1/2-month-old son will drink his bottle by himself only when I lay him flat on the floor. If he is sitting up, he doesn't hold the bottle at the right angle for the milk to come out. Then he gets angry that he's not getting anything from the bottle. I am in the process of trying to get him to drink from a cup, but I am running into the same problem with that as well. Do you have any tips as to how I can help my son learn how to hold the bottle at the right angle?
Answer:
You should be holding him for his bottle anyway, so it needn't be a problem in your lap. When he wants to be more independent, let him learn about the bottle angle by himself. Give him a bottle with orange juice (not milk). Let him play with it in the bathtub without your intervention. Do the same thing with a covered cup that he must tilt for himself. Leave him alone until he can learn both tasks. He'll be so proud when he can conquer them on his own. After he's been successful with other liquids, introduce milk into the cup and bottle.
