Question:
I'm 24 weeks pregnant and at this point can feel only twitching and fluttering. I haven't felt any kicks yet. At what point in my pregnancy should I feel the baby move?
Answer:
Here's the good news -- you're most probably feeling foetal movements, but they just don't feel the way you think a "kick" should feel! Most women begin to be aware of some foetal movements at around 16 weeks of
pregnancy, but the movements rarely feel like a kick. Most of the time, pregnant women say just what you say -- they feel twitching and fluttering. It really isn't until the foetus grows more that the movement you feel will resemble a real kick, so you don't need to worry about this. Be sure to keep your prenatal appointments, and as long as the baby's heartbeat is strong and you continue to feel that twitching and fluttering, things will be going normally. At around 28 weeks, many doctors begin to ask their patients to start becoming more aware of how their
baby is moving. An active
baby is generally a healthy
baby. Towards the end of your
pregnancy, you might even be asked to count the baby's movements for a period of time every day, but many GPs just tell you to let them know if the
baby becomes less active.
