Question:
My 4-week-old daughter loves to stare at bright lights. Is this harmful to her eyes? How far away from the light should she be?

Answer:
Her response to the lights lets you know that she can see, and her staring at bright lights is not harmful. Before long she'll be following you and other objects with her eyes and probably have less interest in just lights. This is a sign that her vision is improving, a process that happens gradually. Just keep her several feet away from the light; if it's too bright, she'll turn away.
