Question:
What can I do to treat nappy rash? And is there any way to prevent it in the first place?

Answer:
Where nappy rash is concerned, prevention is better than cure: keep your baby's bottom dry and clean at all times. No doubt that's easier said than done! The following tricks help treat this common babyhood affliction:
  • Change nappies frequently to reduce moisture on the skin.
  • Air the skin by leaving your baby's bottom bare whenever possible.
  • Clean your baby's bottom thoroughly and pat dry before putting a nappy on after a bowel movement.
  • Avoid using irritants, such as nappy wipes and soap, to clean if it's only a wet nappy.
  • Spread a thick layer of ointment - as recommended by your baby's doctor - to prevent urine from reaching the irritated skin.
  • If all else fails, try a different brand of nappy or detergent if she wears terry nappies.
Nappy rash itself is quite harmless. If, however, it doesn't improve or disappear after a couple of days, or if blistering or pus-filled bumps appear, call your child's doctor. These can indicate an infection, such as yeast or bacteria, which should be examined and treated as soon as possible.
