Question:
I have a 2-year-old who sleeps in a toddler bed for his naps but won't go near it for bedtime; he wants to sleep in the cot. Should I just put the cot away or wait until he wants to sleep in the bed at night?

Answer:
If your house and family can accommodate this, I would let your son choose where he wants to sleep. It sounds as if he has a solid night-time ritual that includes the cot. It offers security, which is important when a child has to separate and sleep in his own bed at night. To ease his transition to the bed, I would put the cot mattress low, with the side rails down, and keep the bedding the same when he makes the big move. If you need to put the cot away, give him a few days' notice so he can get used to the idea. More importantly, let him help you put it away. In general, it seems as if your son needs time to make changes, even good ones. This bed situation may give you some insight into how he will approach similar scenarios in life and how you can help him cope with change throughout childhood.
